First things first!   Are you in a safe place?  
If water is rising fast in your basement, get out and call 911 !

Protect any items stored in a flooding basement, but do it safely.  If possible, remove any items from the area that could be damaged. If you have a camera or smart phone, try to take pictures of the items before you remove them just in case the insurance company needs them as proof for claims. 

If the water is coming from an inside source, such as a broken pipe, try to turn off the water at the main shutoff valve or call your local water company.  If you have a well pump and you can safely navigate to the circuit breaker box, turn off the well pump circuit breaker until help arrives. 

Remember to “be safe and act safely.“
If you aren’t sure what to do or think it is unsafe, call 911.
